Tarnished Queen

Tarnished Queen
8x10, acrylics on canvas
SOLD

This old trailer sits on Route 3 between Augusta and Belfast. I've been driving past it for years, and it holds tremendous appeal for me; it reminds me of the old trailers I remember from my childhood. I've always had a special fondness for these old relics, possibly because I spent so many years of my life living in trailers. None of them were as old as this one, though!

This is probably a dumb question but I am curious...it looks like the left side of the trailer almost has a second floor, and yet it's not quite high enough for that. Maybe the ceilings are just higher in those rooms? I've never seen one like this, it is certainly interesting!

Not a dumb question at all. I remember seeing one of these when I was a small kid, and being fascinated by the trailer that had an upstairs in it. Maybe that's why this one caught my attention. Of course, my definition of "upstairs" as a six-year-old and as an adult are probably worlds apart. I suspect--and I could be wrong, as it's been nearly fifty years--I think the "upstairs" is probably three or four steps up from the main living area, and probably consists of a small bedroom or a couple of bunks. Those narrow windows look like bedroom/bunk windows for a trailer from that era. The "upstairs" was probably a clever innovation in its time, but never caught on, so they stopped making them. Sure wish I could get inside this one and see what it looks like! I don't think anybody's currently living in it, but somebody probably has in the fairly recent past, because in real life, there's a sign leaning up against the side of the trailer that says FREE KITTENS. I didn't try to paint it in because the painting was so small, it would have been impossible to make the words legible. If I was a brave woman, and not the chicken that I am, I'd walk up to the door and knock on it, just in case somebody actually lives there. But never, not in this lifetime or any other, would I be that courageous!

Hi Laurie, I just posted a response and it disappeared, I hope this doesn't appear twice!

That makes sense, to have a bedroom loft, it would be a wise use of limited space.

Laurie, you are not a chicken at all! You should have knocked at the door and asked for a free kitten, and if no one answered....well, you could just look around!

Yeah, but what if they handed me a kitten? LOL. Hubby would love that...
